The alterations are sympathetic, highly sustainable and retain the existing rural character of the barns. PAD studio’s design approach breathes new life into the existing buildings in a sympathetic yet dynamic way. The double height living spaces allow the glorious proportions to be appreciated and help to give the cottages a feeling of spaciousness. Working closely with the client, quirky features have been introduced which fits with the ethos of the farm as a whole and the fun-loving nature of the client.

Often our client’s approach us with an idea of what they would like, sometimes it is list of requirements, sometimes an essence of what they want to achieve and sometimes it has been encapsulated in a painting. By working in collaboration with our clients we are able to recognise what they are truly striving for, translating what might be abstract in their heads into a beautiful, physical building. This is why we place great importance on talking in detail at the initial stages and ensuring that the brief is clear. This stage becomes a roadmap for all future work.

"We use renewable energy sources for all of our heating and hot water needs, for all of the barns plus the farm house and farm cottages; we are carbon neutral or, if you really want to get with it, we are “sustainably exploiting our natural resources”. We harness a mixture of the sun (PV solar for electricity and thermal solar for hot water); the air (air source heat pump) for heating, and renewable fossil fuels (wood pellet boiler for heating and hot water). Waste goes into a giant biodigester."
